Java SE Development Kit (JDK) 6 Update 11, developed by Sun Microsystems, Inc., is a complete toolkit for building, testing, and running applications on the Java Platform, Standard Edition 6. It includes the Java Runtime Environment (JRE); core class libraries; header files; sample code; and a suite of development tools such as the Java compiler (javac), packaging and documentation utilities (jar, javadoc), and debugging and monitoring tools (jdb, jconsole).
This update focuses on security, stability, and performance improvements, and refines the next-generation Java Plug-in and Java Web Start features introduced in the 6u10 line, improving startup behavior, browser integration, and reliability for applets and rich Internet applications. The JDK enables developers to create cross-platform desktop and server software using APIs such as Swing, AWT, JDBC, RMI, and the concurrency utilities. As a legacy release, it is intended primarily for maintaining applications that target Java SE 6.
